World Blood Donor Day
On June 26th, 2011 1362 people gathered together at St. Joseph School in Kornet Chehwan to celebrate World Blood Donor Day. Attendees were served fresh coffee and an assortment of juice provided by McCaw while our blood mascot, a large felt blood droplet, walked around to greet people. Over 60 people gave blood on the spot at the AUBMC blood truck while others visited a variety of stands, enjoyed the music, or checked the 20 educational banners about blood. The banners included one with the top ten excuses for not donating blood, a banner explaining the blood donation process, one educating about blood and platelets, a banner promoting the DSC movie, “From Inside”, a banner proving the blood type statistics and needs in Lebanon, and a huge banner with the pictures of the DSC heroes or donors. In addition, many attendees got their “Blood Brothers” bracelets and registered to become potential donors with DSC.
Red T-shirts reading “Share Life Give Blood” on the front and “Donate Blood Be Someone’s Hero” on the back were given to all who attended. These shirts were given in recognition of World Blood Donor Day and to create uniformity in appearance for the creation of the human blood drop. DSC organized the “world’s largest human drop of blood”, consisting of 1362 people ranging from blood donors and volunteers to supporters who stood in the shape of a blood drop and breaking the previous record of 1,051 persons held by “LifeSouth” in Florida.
Media representatives from OTV and Horra TV were covering the event for the television broadcast later that evening.
This event was a small token of appreciation for all of the volunteers and donors who selflessly dedicate their time and blood everyday.
